I found the initial piece deeply affecting and appreciate this conversation about it. I happened to be reading a book called H is for Hawk around the same time. The metaphor of the Hawk, messenger or message. The Hawk's shadow. I couldn't help but draw parallels to TH White's take on Merlin discussed in H is for Hawk.
I have gone through similar struggles trying to make it in NY City in the publishing industry (interned for Grove and did agency and scouting work) and also felt at odds in a similar way, in a different time, though I can't say that I was able to conjure the magnitude of courage or put clarity to my experience in the way Luke has been able to grasp. It certainly brought tears to my eyes seeing the struggle on paper. The essay pushed me to reexamine what I went through as well.
