I believe you can friendly fire sleep - it's got a smaller radius and it doesn't 'fill' but if you have allies in the target range and affect enough hd they will take a nap.
We never interpreted it that way as the spell description didn’t have a radius or explicit call out for friendly fire. Always a challenge with this version of the rules, as I think back to playing it.
The text states creatures - there is no suggestion that it only targets enemy creatures at all. There is no text I am aware of in Moldvay that implies there is no friendly fire. Or are you suggesting that spell implies targeting because the area of effect is not listed?
Sleep. The Fireball of early levels, only without the nasty side effect of friendly fire.
