Buried on page B60 of the Moldvay edition of Dungeons & Dragons we find a section of the rules entitled “Dungeon Mastering As Fine Art.” This section contains important clarifications, rubrics and heuristics directed toward the erstwhile dungeon master. Amidst typical fare like advice to be flexible and fair, Mr Moldvay highlights three key items that set the tone for collaboration, authority and improvisation in the game.
